Well, either way, this film was a visual feast. The way that scale was conveyed was breath-taking. I'm not sure whether I read this somewhere or if I can take credit for it myself, but the difference came in the way that Abrams shoved aside the traditional Star Trek view of Enterprise as a lumbering naval ship and took a more Star Wars-esquire dogfight approach.
This has set a high standard for a new era of Star Trek that I hope will spawn at least a couple more films. It's not that I wasn't impressed with the character development, the acting, the script or the story - it's just that this film looked so gorgeous that I haven't been able to think of anything else since I saw it last night!
But sufficed to say, this was overall an excellent feature. Final warning: see this film in the cinema. Do not wait for it to come out on DVD.

In August , the members of the Internal Revenue Service created a Star Trek themed training video for a conference. Revealed to the public in , the spoof along with parodies of other media franchises was cited as an example of the misuse of taxpayer funds in a congressional investigation.
Star Trek has been parodied in several non-English movies, including the German Traumschiff Surprise — Periode 1 which features a gay version of the Original Series bridge crew and a Turkish film that spoofs that same series' episode " The Man Trap " in one of the series of films based on the character Turist Ömer.
The Orville is a comedy-drama science fiction television series created by Seth MacFarlane that premiered on September 10, , on Fox.
MacFarlane, a longtime fan of the franchise who previously guest-starred on an episode of Enterprise , created the series with a similar look and feel as the Star Trek series.
Until , Paramount Pictures and CBS permitted fan-produced films and episode-like clips to be produced. Several veteran Star Trek actors and writers participated in many of these productions.
Several producers turned to crowdfunding , such as Kickstarter , to help with production and other costs. Popular productions include: New Voyages — and Star Trek Continues — Additional productions include: Of Gods and Men , originally released as a three-part web series, and Prelude to Axanar.
Of the various science fiction awards for drama, only the Hugo Award dates back as far as the original series. No Star Trek feature film has ever won a Hugo Award.
In , the fan-made Star Trek: New Voyages episode "World Enough and Time" was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Short Drama.

Star Trek began as a joint-production of Norway Productions, owned by Roddenberry, and Desilu , owned by Desi Arnaz. The profit-sharing agreement for the series split proceeds between Norway, Desilu—later Paramount Television , William Shatner's production company, and the broadcast network, NBC.
However, Star Trek lost money during its initial broadcast, and NBC did not expect to recoup its losses by selling the series into syndication, nor did Paramount.
With NBC's approval, Paramount offered its share of the series to Roddenberry sometime in NBC's remaining broadcast and distribution rights eventually returned to Paramount and Roddenberry sometime before , which coincided with the development of what would become The Next Generation.
Sometime before , Sumner Redstone had acquired a controlling stake of Viacom via his family's theater chain, National Amusements. Viacom was established in as a division of CBS responsible for syndicating the network's in-house productions, originally called CBS Films.
In , Viacom and Paramount Communications were merged. National Amusements and the Redstone family increased their stake in the combined company between and In , the Redstone family reorganized Viacom, spinning off the conglomerate's assets as two independent groups: the new Viacom , and the new CBS Corporation.
The terms of this split were not known. However, CBS held all copyrights, marks, production assets, and film negatives, to all Star Trek television series.
CBS also retained the rights to all likenesses, characters, names and settings, and stories, and the right to license Star Trek , and its spin-offs, to merchandisers, and publishers, etc.
Viacom , which housed Paramount Pictures , retained the feature film library, and exclusive rights to produce new feature films for a limited time.
It was unclear who retained the synchronization or streaming rights. Rights and distribution issues, and the fraught relationship between the leadership at CBS, Viacom, and the National Amusements' board of directors, resulted in a number of delayed and or cancelled Star Trek productions between and While several attempts were made to merge Viacom and CBS, power struggles between the major stakeholders of the companies prevented this from happening.
In , after the resignation of CBS CEO, Leslie Moonves , negotiations to merge CBS and Viacom began in earnest. These negotiations were led by Shari Redstone , chairman of the National Amusements, and Joe Ianniello, then CEO of Viacom.

Beyer, the writer of many Star Trek: Voyager novels , explained that she would work with fellow Star Trek novelist David Mack and Star Trek comic writer Mike Johnson to ensure that all three media "are coming from the same place".
The release of the books and comics was set to coincide with the series' premiere. That made it a challenge to represent that era faithfully while also staying true to the new elements being introduced" in the new series.
Beyer explained in August that the intention of the series' writers was to take story opportunities that the series did not have time to address and let them be told through other media.
She said the novels and comic books would not be required reading to understand the series, but would enhance the overall story for fans.
She said the writers of the tie-in works and the series' writers room would work together to not contradict each other, but if an idea was developed for the series that did not work with something established in a tie-in then the series would take priority.
Beyer's hope was that parts of the universe could be "carve[d] out" specifically for the tie-ins so the series would not interfere with them.
The first tie-in novel was Desperate Hours , a prequel set one year before Discovery and one year after " The Cage ". Written by David Mack, the novel follows Burnham aboard the Shenzhou.
Fuller had asked for a book to be written based on that premise, and Mack worked with the Discovery writers to remain "in the loop" with the series' backstory.
In July , IDW announced a new tie-in miniseries based on Discovery , described as "Klingon-centric".
Johnson compared working with Beyer to his work on the Star Trek: Countdown comic—a tie-in to the Star Trek film co-written by Kurtzman—saying that her position as a staff writer on Discovery meant "we have all the inside access that we need.
So the story in the comic will really matter and not just feel like a one-off. Johnson stated that they were "building out the characters in the Klingon world with these comics, and we can't wait to show you.
IDW editor Sarah Gaydos said, "The access we're getting to the show to create these comics that are integral to fleshing out the backstories of the characters is unheard of, and I do a lot of licensed comics.
IDW published as the Star Trek: Discovery Annual on March 28, , written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson. The Annual focused on Stamets' mycelial network research.
It is set in the Mirror Universe and expands on the Mirror Universe story arc from the second chapter of the first season A one-shot issue, exploring events aboard Discovery with Saru acting as Captain on a one-time mission, was announced in November It covers the time after the Discovery travels to the future at the end of the second season and before Spock goes back to duty aboard the Enterprise.
By August , "hours" of Discovery -based content were set to be added to the video game Star Trek Timelines , including introducing Michael Burnham and Saru as new crew members for the game and new ships from the show, Federation and otherwise.
A month-long "Mega-Event" based on the series was run to coincide with the launch of the series. Set during the first season of the series following the Battle at the Binary Stars, the event introduces a story set on the USS Glenn and includes the character Sylvia Tilly.
Wiseman returned to voice the character. Other elements inspired by the series included new starship and Klingon designs. Before July , CBS began developing an aftershow companion series to Discovery , similar to AMC 's Talking Dead , a companion to The Walking Dead.
The companion series was confirmed in , with the title After Trek and host Matt Mira. The series aired after each episode of Discovery , and featured a rotating panel of guests, including celebrity Trekkies , former Star Trek actors, cast members and crew from Discovery.
CBS announced in June that After Trek would be re-imagined for the second season of Discovery. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
